Keystone Woodturners – August Meeting

Keystone Woodturners

Keystone Woodturners is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. We share the purpose of providing education and information to those interested in woodturning. The Club was founded in 1996 and has grown to over 60 members. We meet monthly on the third Wednesday of the month. Check out the other tabs on this website for examples of what we and our members have been doing and for other information about the Club.

August Meeting

Our meeting this month will be held at Joe’s shop on Wednesday August 19, 2015 beginning at 7 PM.

Meeting Agenda:

Pre-Meeting Wood and Anchorseal Sale (7 -7:15 PM)

Our Wood Procurement Team has been very busy accumulating some great wood, fresh cut Cherry and Black Walnut. The wood has been labeled and one end has been sealed. The wood will be sold for our usual great prices. We will also be selling Anchorseal II, bring your own container.

Welcome: Les Bailey – President

Show and Tell and President’s Challenge

Our members bring in their latest work, describe how they made it and discuss the problems they experienced and how they solved them. This is always a great learning experience for all.

Les has established a President’s Challenge for each Club member to make a Beads of Courage Bowl for our September meeting, and members who have completed theirs will show and discuss them. Beads of Courage is a program in which the Club makes containers for children with cancer to hold the beads that they receive during the treatment. We are committed to making 10 bowls each for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Dupont Children’s Hospital.

The first entries for our September Battle Tops Competition will we brought in for sizing and weighing.

Demonstration –  Hollow Form Tools II

Yak previously showed us how he hollows his vessels, this month Joe McCann and Harry Pye will show us how they hollow their vessels. Joe will demo hollowing with the Jamieson tool. He will go over the fundamentals of the tool. He will demonstrate its usage but will not make a complete hollow form.

A group of four vases and bowls on display.

Harry will build on what Joe has already done and demonstrate the Monster Articulated Arm Hollowing Tool. In principle the two systems are the same. The Jamieson system uses a captured bar while the Monster uses articulated links with three pivots. The lasers work the same way in each system. Harry will turn the outside of a small vase and drill a center hole in a piece before the meeting. His part of the demo will be hollowing the vase, and he will try to maintain a wall thickness of 1/8″ to 3/16″.

A group of four vases and bowls on display.

Raffle

Pat McBride  will be conducting our usual raffle, so bring in your spare wood (some of our Wood Procurement Team’s wood will be raffled as well), and surplus tools, donate them to the Club and give other members the chance to put them to use while increasing our Club Treasury.
